Marco

The Warriors made a small splash in today’s sports headlines by trading Marco Belinelli to the Toronto Raptors for Devean Geroge and some cash. When I say small splash, I mean small splash, because I had to look real close to find the headline for this news. Yes, if I were to go on the Warriors blog, I could have found it easily, since it was the first article, but that wasn’t the first place I looked. Since finding this piece of news, I’ve searched the Internet to find more reactions to this trade, if any at all. The number one thing I’ve found was Marco was an under-achieving player. His summer league stats were phenomenal. Anyone who watched or paid attention to the summer league, was waiting for this guy to blossom, come NBA season. But he never blossomed, in fact he never grew. His minutes barely increased and his stats barely made an impact for the Warriors. Lots of folks are saying he looked lost and wasn’t on the same page as Nelly and Co.  This as such a disappointing draft pick. But then again, under Mullin, he has only made a few good choices in draft picks. But if you look it at that way, this seems like another pick wasted. It’s hard to judge a player when he plays overseas or in college to see if they can really hang in the NBA. Sometimes you get lucky, like stealing Monte at the 40th pick, or they are just a bust like Patrick O’Bryant.

It’s hard to fault a guy, when maybe the system that he is in doesn’t fit him. And it goes both ways. Maybe Marco will flourish under the Toronto Raptors and then here in the Bay Area, we’ll all be scratching our head wondering if this is the same guy that we traded for some aging veteran that I don’t think will help us much. He’s going to a team with an abundance of international players, and we all know that international players play a different style, so well see if the run and gun style was not his way of playing, or if he really is just a bust.

With all that said, this has still been a quiet summer for the Warriors and pretty disappointing as a fan. I’m watching as almost every team is adding and subtracting to make their team better and get over the final hump while the Warriors have not dabbled in the summer market. Even the Bobcats made a much better trade than ours! Maybe this is the beginning of a cycle of trades for the Warriors. I hope they do, because come season time, I just don’t know if we have enough to compete.
