No NBA season = no money. It is clear cut. Black and white. Clear as day. But what isn’t that clear is that money lost is just for the NBA players and owners, but also the 9-5 regular joe. Reports have already come through stating that business have been losing money since the lockout happened.
It has been reported that the Miami Heat stand to lose about $200 million. And it is because of “the Big 3″ that the lockout has dragged. Every small market team, lead by His Airness, Michael Jordan, saw this combination happening as the future of the league and know they can’t compete with the big market clubs. More than 3/4th of the NBA teams reported in losing money, while only a few teams broke even and even fewer number of teams actually made a profit. So when everyone saw that D-Wade, LBJ and Chris Bosh combined forces and saw that Amare and Carmelo were beginning to court and form another big three, it is only fitting that small market owners are fighting the good fight. With rejecting the last offer made by the owners, the players have hindered themselves into accepting an even worse deal. The owners, at this point, have the upper hand. As of today, players have lost a combined $220,000 in paycheck. And while some top tier players are willingly to sit out until they get the “right deal”, some lower level entry players are now living back at home to save some money (and Mr. Kris Kardashian Humphries, now reeling even more since he is getting divorced and didn’t get paid like a Kobe, is probably cursing at the gods!) No one side is a winner and it is hard to give any sympathy towards. It’s even more worse now that in a public survey, people aren’t missing basketball as much, which even gives less leverage to the players. Finding a good balance will be difficult and now the season is even more in dire circumstances. Doesn’t the decisions by Deron Williams and others who have signed overseas look like they are geniuses and psychics? It won’t be a surprise if more NBA players flock overseas to at least get a paycheck and refine their skills.
As for the Warriors, Stephen Curry has now expressed even more of a desire to play. Right now Curry is enrolled at Davidson to finish his degree, but with the lockout appearing to last longer than expected, Curry is looking to where, when and how much when it is about determining his future. A good quick article in the Oakland Tribute is a good read.
