The Boston Celtics are arguably the most storied franchise in the NBA. Over their 67-year history, they have had 31 Hall of Fame players. They have also won the most championships of any other team at 17. Playing in an arena where the names “Parish,” “Russell,” “McHale” and “Bird” hang above you fuels you with a sense of historical pride. To have your name hang up on those same rafters is a great source of inspiration and urgency for a player looking to make their mark.

The true test to whether or not “storied franchise” is enough to woo free agents is upon us. After dealing out their two best players in Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, the Celtics are in a dedicated rebuilding period, something free agents probably don’t want to be a part of. It will be interesting to see what free agents the Celtics will acquire in this period.
