Why Iguodala’s comments do not matter

Recently Golden State Warriors backup guard, Andre Iguodala, made a statement saying that the Oklahoma City Thunder should have won the NBA title. This statement was made not too long after the Warriors officially signed former Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant.

The Golden State Warriors may not have won the championship this past season, but Warriors backup Andre Iguodala thinks that the Cavaliers should not have won it either.

Iguodala said that the Thunder should have won the NBA championship citing that they were the tougher match up in the postseason for Golden State. For those who may have forgotten the Oklahoma City Thunder held a commanding 3-1 series lead over the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals before the Warriors came back to advance to their second consecutive NBA Final.

The Thunder were lead by a pair of superstars in Russell Westbrook and more interestingly Kevin Durant. Coincidentally (or maybe not so much) these comments came shortly after the Warriors officially signed Kevin Durant and were made instant favorites to win the NBA Title.

The Cleveland Cavaliers overcame their own 3-1 deficit in the NBA Finals that lead in a heartbreaking defeat for the Warriors and a well earned (and long awaited) championship for the Cavs lead by LeBron James. The Cavaliers fought hard for this championship and this statement obviously doesn’t effect who the NBA champs this season were, but Iguodala brings up an interesting point at an interesting time.

Iguodala does make an interesting point considering that the Warriors beat the Thunder the same way they lost to the Cavaliers. The Thunder were so close to the NBA Finals and they definitely should have closed on their 3-1 series lead (although the same can be said of the Warriors) and if the Thunder advanced who knows what would have happened in the Finals.

In that sense Iguodala’s comments may have not been so much “against” the Cavs as they may have been more about how impressive the Thunder were in the Conference Finals.

Another interesting part of this statement was how close it was to the Warriors signing Kevin Durant. Durant was the leader of the Thunder and perhaps this comment was just meant as a compliment to Iguodala’s new teammate. Either way this comment is not a big deal, strategical or not, the Cavaliers are still champions and Iguodala was just giving his opinion.

Iguodala is one of my favorite Warriors player, personally, and this comment did not make me any less of a fan of him at all. He was just giving his opinion, and like it or not, he will still be an integral part of the Warriors next season.
