Clearly if I was the GM of the Warriors, I would have not taken these guys. Nor did I expect to find something as good as our first pick of the night. The Warriors selected, Harrison Barnes, a forward from North Carolina, with the seventh pick of 2012 NBA draft. With Andre Drummond still on the board, I thought the Warriors might have grabbed him. Instead the Warriors nabbed, a steal in the draft with Barnes and have someone to help in the future.

June 28, 2012; Newark, NJ, USA; Harrison Barnes (North Carolina), right, is introduced as the number seven overall pick to the Golden State Warriors by NBA commissioner David Stern during the 2012 NBA Draft at the Prudential Center.
They also took Festus Ezeli, a center from Vanderbilt, Draymond Green, a forward from Michigan State and Ognjen Kuzmic, a center from Clinicas Rincon of the Spanish LEB Gold League.

Two of the guys are shot blockers, which the Warriors are in desperate need of defender of the rim. While Barnes can quickly come into the league and probably help the Warriors, Ezeli, Green and Kuzmic are projects for the future. Hopefully when Beidrins contract is up, A) They don’t resign him and B) Ezeli or Kuzmic will be ready to fill in that void. I think that both those guys can get significant playing experience this year, with Beidrins clearly falling out of favor with coach Mark Jackson and his ability to get injured and stay injured for a long time.

With Barnes, the Warriors get a guy who has already performed at a high level. No doubt that the rivalries between Duke and North Carolina have made some of the best TV as well as great college ball, it is unknown how well Barnes can perform at the next level. Remember, there has yet to be a Hall of Famer from Duke, while North Carolina boasts at least Michael Jordan and Larry Brown. So Barnes may have come from college to successful NBA career route, but there is no guarantee.

With that said, the Warriors should be excited about the picks this year. Certainly if Stephen Curry and Andrew Bogut get healthy and stay healthy, I would think the Warriors starting five could compete. They need to fill out their bench and I think they got a little bit more deeper with their selections. Also, if picks 30 and later, can develop quickly, they can definitely help the Warriors defend the rim better and not give up so many points.
