Bob Myers on Draymond Green: Warriors Fans ‘Shouldn’t Worry’

It doesn’t look like Draymond Green is going anywhere anytime soon.

Golden State Warriors GM Bob Myers is going to make sure of that. As the team held it’s pre-Game 6 shootaround, Myers told media to “tell the Warriors fans they shouldn’t worry” according to Jeff Faraudo of the Bay Area News Group.

Green is a restricted free agent this summer, meaning the Warriors can match any offer presented by other clubs. Green’s hometown Detroit Pistons seem to be the biggest threat to Golden State’s plans to retain the forward. With big man Greg Monroe seemingly on the move, there’s an opening in Detroit’s frontcourt for the former Michigan State Spartan. Furthermore, Green is represented by the Wasserman Media Group which was led by Arn Tellem, who left the group to join the Pistons in an advisory capacity.

Green made some comments earlier in the year suggesting a desire to play in Detroit which, according to him, were taken out of context.

Green is loved in the Bay Area and for good reason. Finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, he helped solidify the best defense in the NBA. He is the perfect compliment to the Warriors’ All-Star backcourt. While the Splash Brothers are quite and methodical, Green is energetic and gritty. Taking over the starting power forward start at the beginning of the season, he’s showed a toughness that towers over his much larger opponents.

A second round pick, Green has surpassed all expectations and blossomed into a premier defender. He plays with a fire and passion that jump starts the team on both sides of the ball. Many argue that Green is a product of the system and that he wouldn’t be successful in any other situation. But defense and toughness translate anywhere. And in the modern NBA where the stretch four is becoming increasingly prominent, Green

Myers can’t directly comment on Green’s free agent status, but it seems pretty clear that he doesn’t want to let Green go anywhere. He’s already taken care of Klay Thompson after trade rumors dominated last offseason. It’s unknown how much Myers is willing to spend or if money is a factor to him at all as he still has Harrison Barnes‘ free agency to worry about in addition to an eventual Stephen Curry deal and a possible Kevin Durant signing amongst other expenditures.

Green is a vital part of the Warriors’ core. He is the heart and soul of the machine that Golden State has become. But two things are for sure: Green has earned every penny that’s coming his way and, if the Warriors can close it out, a championship won’t hurt their chances.
