The Golden State Warriors have made some roster moves, waiving veteran center Anderson Varejao and signing D-League guard Briante Weber.

The Anderson Varejao era in the Bay Area is over. The Golden State Warriors have decided to waive the veteran center . They’ve cleared space to sign D-League guard Briante Weber to a 10-day contract.

Varejao spent 12 years with the Cleveland Cavaliers until they traded him last February. The Portland Trailblazers immediately waived him and Golden State scooped him up. He played 22 games for the Warriors as they chased the single season wins record.

The Brazilian big man didn’t produce much on the court. In a total of 36 games in a Warriors uniform, he averaged 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 7.7 minutes per game. He started one game, played over 18 minutes and was -19 in his time on the floor.

Many Warriors fans have pinned some of the blame for the Warriors’ Game 7 collapse in the NBA Finals. He was -9 in 8:29. It was a confusing move for Steve Kerr to play a guy who couldn’t see the court during the regular season in the most important game in NBA history.

To fill the space that Varejao left, Golden State will sign Briante Weber. He has most recently played with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, D-League affiliate of the Miami Heat. Weber is averaging 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 7.4 assists. He was named the D-League Player of the Month for January (joining the two Western Conference Players who earned the same NBA honors).

Weber has spent seven games in the big leagues. He played six games with the Memphis Grizzlies last season, averaging 4.8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in 27.7 minutes per game. He started four games for them. He played one game with the Heat playing just three minutes.

The Warriors had too many guys that can play Varejao’s position that are more useful. While his presence in the locker room will be missed, he wasn’t the player he was a few years ago and is quickly reaching the end of his career. He didn’t have a lot to give on the court.

Weber can give Golden State some depth at the guard position. The 6’2 guard is the playmaker that the

Warriors have been looking for.
