Breaking: Steve Kerr Contemplating Retirement After Season

Even with the top record in the NBA and the apparent MVP, not all is well in the Bay Area for the Golden State Warriors.

Sources closes to the situation have revealed that Steve Kerr is debating retirement after this season is over regardless of the end result.

Sources say that Kerr has expressed a “desire to step away from basketball again.” Kerr, a Coach of the Year candidate, has led Golden State to the best record in the NBA and a favorite to win the title. He’s improved the Warriors’ stagnant, isolation-heavy offense under Mark Jackson to something free-flowing and extremely efficient. With Kerr at the helm, the Dubs lead the league in assists and pretty much every other offensive category.

Despite his tumultuous relationship with upper management, Jackson’s bond with the players was undeniable. He was well-respected in the locker room. Kerr’s biggest hurdle this season has not been James Harden, Russell Westbrook, or Anthony Davis. Rather, it was his own players. Kerr had to win over a locker room reeling from the quick dismissal of their leader.

It seemed as if Kerr had done it, yet it all could have just been an act. The team chemistry and success on the floor suggested that everyone had bought into Kerr’s system and philosophy. Star Stephen Curry often goes head-to-head with Kerr in practice as they compete in a free throw shooting competition.

But seems that Kerr and the Warriors had us all fooled.

Sources say that it’s a combination of several things building up to push Kerr to where he is now. The insider, who spoke on condition of anonymity, says that Kerr’s biggest reason is that he wants to spend time with his family. Apparently, the toll of an 82+ game season (including playoffs) has become too much for him as he had gotten accustomed to his broadcasting schedule.

Furthermore, Kerr cites basketball reasons as well. Apparently, he hasn’t won over every member of the team. Though the source wouldn’t say who, some aren’t convinced Kerr’s methods will work in the long run. Players and rosters can change frequently so it seems like it must be one of the core players that aren’t pleased with the coach.

Lastly, Kerr has “become bored of winning.” Kerr, a 5-time NBA champion, knows how to win and apparently has grown tired of it. It seems odd, especially this early into his coaching career, but I suppose it happens.

The insider also reported something somewhat ironic. Joe Lacob’s first phone call after Kerr met with him was to none other than Mark Jackson. Jackson has a familiarity with the team and, they hope, he could step back into the coaching position building on what Kerr built off him. Jackson, who’s been linked to several teams throughout the season including the Cleveland Cavaliers, has told friends and family that he wants to coach in a place where his wife can sing the national anthem every night.

In a region shocked by some sudden retirements as of late (49ers), this would surely take the cake if confirmed. Kerr’s camp hasn’t responded to any requests for comments as of yet. This situation truly is incredible; a frontrunner for Coach of the Year stepping away possibly after a championship in his rookie season.

In a sudden turn of events, BlueManHoop has been informed that these sources are completely bogus. In fact, I cited my own Tweets, specifically made for this article, in an effort to create something amusing.
