On Saturday afternoon at Oracle Arena, the stage was set for Stephen Curry to show the world who was the NBA MVP and he definitely did not disappoint.
Curry scored 34 points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out five assists in a 106-99 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans in Game 1, leaving the Oracle crowd and all the experts no doubt that he is the MVP. This was a typical performance for the Baby Faced Assassin, with the exception of how he scored his points. Usually when Curry has a huge game, he hits over 5 three pointers but on Saturday afternoon, he did most of his damage in the paint.
Curry made eight layups in the game, bringing the Oracle crowd to its feet every time he drove to the rim. Late in the second quarter, Curry had two and-one layups that really put the game away when the Pelicans were fighting to get back into it. His highlight of the day may have been a fast break layup when he went up and under Anthony Davis, took the contact, and laid it in high off the glass, giving the Warriors a 18 point lead going into halftime. The Oracle crowd went absolutely insane, which led to countless MVP chants throughout the game.
When Curry wasn’t hitting threes or driving to the rim, he was making the Pelicans look foolish on the pick-and-roll, finding Draymond Green and Andrew Bogut for uncontested dunks because all eyes were on him. He got countless “hockey assists” as well because he does not care if he gets the resulting assist, he only cares about if the Warriors get the best shot possible during the possession.
A “hockey assist”usually happens when the point guard draws the defense towards him, and passes to an open man who finds another teammate with a better shot, resulting in a basket. The Warriors do this constantly because they don’t just want good shots, but great shots, which tells you why they led the league in assists. So even though Curry only had five assists, the constant attention drawn to him gives the Warriors great shots on a nightly basis. Combine the fact that he is a lethal shooter, unbelievable handler and has outstanding court vision leads many to believe that he is the MVP.
He gives everyone easier looks at the rim because of these skills which should take this team a long way. Forget the fact that the Pelicans cut into the lead in the 4th quarter because if the Warriors hit their free throws, which they usually do, they cruise to a 15 point victory. For some reason, Curry and his fellow Splash Brother, Klay Thompson both missed three free throws in the game, which will never happen again in the postseason. Even with all the missed free throws, the Oracle crowd still had no doubts about what the outcome of this matchup would be. This was all because we have the MVP and ultimate faith that he would lead us to victory.
