I had an opening for this article that I worked on and tinkered with for a little over an hour. It was just a few sentences (you can see it here if you really want). I’m sitting in a Panera by my school changing what I had. And it’s all because of what I just overheard.

More from Stephen Curry

There’s a father in the booth behind me with his two boys; they’re probably about 7 or 8 years old. As I sat down, I overheard the dad tell them “Steph Curry won the MVP.” Then one of the boys asked “so does that mean he’s the best basketball player?” The dad answered yes and explained what “MVP” stood for. Then the other boy screamed out “Yes! I knew he would do it!” The boys then broke down why the Golden State Warriors are so great.

This is why I changed what I wrote. This is what the MVP means to a region who had to endure a success drought bigger than the literal drought it’s undergoing. Stephen Curry is the 2014-15 National Basketball Association’s Most Valuable Player. Most importantly though, Curry is the people’s MVP; he’s the engine that keeps DubNation going.

During his MVP press conference, Curry said

"Make sure you live in the moment and work your butt off every single day, and I hope I inspire people all around the world to just be themselves, be humble, and be grateful for all the blessings in your life.  I’m truly honored to be your MVP this year."

Curry isn’t just the MVP, he’s our MVP. He’s the type of star that a father wants his kids to aspire to be like. He’s the type of star whose story writers love to tell. When you’re in the gym, you try to hit those difficult pull up threes that Curry treats like layups. He’s the type of player you want on your squad. Not just because he’ll turn everything around and make your once lowly franchise relevant, but because he’s the hardest working leader.

At this point, everything that can be said about Curry has been said by someone somewhere. But to Warriors fans, after all they’ve been through, will never stop listening to it.
