Stephen Curry is the People’s MVP
A Bonafide Superstar
When I sat down to write this piece, this was supposed to be an objective-based article detailing why voters got it right. I was going to write about why, although he had a terrific season that earns him hardware any other year, James Harden was not the rightful MVP this season. And sure, I have some stats and some numbers and some analysis. But honestly, as a basketball fan and, more specifically, as a Warriors fan, it’s impossible to not marvel over Curry’s accomplishments and story. This year has been a special for him and his ever-growing fan base.

We have a bonafide superstar. He is ours, DubNation. One that now comes with his own shoes, commercials, and brand. One whose reputation as a marksman precedes him. One that will regularly represent his team at the All-Star game and his country in international play. And despite all this, he’s still human. Curry is as humble as the guy fighting for a roster spot, but as edgy as they come. He has a beautiful family and plays golf in his spare time. And that’s why he’s so special to us. He’s one of us.Curry can be our classmate, friend, or neighbor. And he makes basketball look so easy that we trick ourselves into believing that we can do some of the things he does (honestly, I’ve tried this move a million times and I still don’t get it).
Curry has become a global icon. With a jumper that’s stuff of legend, Curry’s entering rarefied air in terms of stardom. Curry has accomplished everything on the superstar checklist: have a signature shoe, earn big endorsements, and delve into the pop culture world. Rapper Drake’s “0-100” features the, now, iconic line “I been Steph Curry with the shot/Been cooking’ with the sauce, Chef Curry with the pot” which is a part of Curry’s identity now. The “Baby Faced Assassin” is now recognized by the casual fan. Curry has reached a point where he transcends basketball.
