3. Underdog

According to Jamie Foxx, Stephen Curry is “patron saint of the underdog.”

He was dismissed by sports apparel leader Nike. He dropped to the 7th spot in the 2009 Draft. He was overlooked and discredited by “experts” because he’s too small, one-dimensional, injury-prone, etc.

Every Division I basketball program disregarded Curry. His father’s alma mater, Virginia Tech, offered him a chance to walk-on. Every school passed up on the undersized guard except for Davidson College, a small mid-major in North Carolina. The red and grey of this shoe are inspired by his improbable journey and experience as a Davidson Wildcat.

Davidson hadn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 1969. Then, in his sophomore season, he led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight. His exciting play opened eyes all around the country. The Wildcats lost a thriller to the eventual champion Kansas Jayhawks, but Curry had already made his presence known.

This shoe represents everything that Curry is about; embracing the underdog role. He did it after every school passed him up. He did it when his team flew under the radar during the NCAA Tournament. And, when Under Armour took him on, he carried the company to relevancy in the basketball world.

Maybe I’m partial to this colorway because I own it, but it’s a beautiful shoe with an inspiring story behind it.
