Golden State Warriors Make History But How Far Can They Go?

The Golden State Warriors made it 16 straight wins to start the season on Tuesday night, and that in turn secures their place in the NBA history books. But just when will the streak end?

A 111-77 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night saw the Golden State Warriors make history, and it was simply another exceptional display from this group of talented players. While that statistic in itself is impressive enough, the fact that the Warriors have outscored their opponents by an average of 15.6 points and have led by more than 15 points for longer than they have trailed by any margin so far this season continues to paint the picture of just how dominant they have been.

After securing a 67-win season last year, the records continue to tumble and this roster and coaching staff continue to write their names into franchise and NBA folklore.

Whether or not they were specifically pushing for this record is unknown, as ultimately even though the adulation that they are enjoying right now is great, the players and coaches will know that the objective this season is to win another championship. Many will argue that making history is equally as important and satisfying as getting a ring, but on the other hand, these players and the organisation will be remembered for the number of titles they won and whether or not they created a dynasty.

The approach within the camp is the correct one, with the likes of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green deflecting questions about the 72-win record by the Chicago Bulls and insisting that they are only concerned with win number 17 and that the records are for the media to discuss.

And discuss we shall. How long can this streak go on for? Few would have expected Golden State to fight back from a 23-point deficit against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center last week, while the fact that the Brooklyn Nets were able to take this squad into overtime was just as much of a shock.

That game in particular served as a reminder that this streak can come to an end at any given time, and it will be up to the players to approach it night by night and continue to work towards their ultimate goal. In reality, if the Warriors perform to the best of their ability, there is no reason why they can’t come away with wins over the Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz and Charlotte Hornets in their next four games.

That schedule does include some tricky road trips and it is slightly congested which could test the depth on this roster, but you would expect the Warriors to come through those match-ups provided that they play at the level that they are capable of on both ends of the court.

In turn, that takes us up to 20-0, and that could be where the unbeaten run comes under threat. The Warriors head to Toronto to face the Raptors on December 5 as part of a long and testing trip over in the East, and while that in itself will be a tough atmosphere and team to deal with, they take on the Indiana Pacers a few nights later.

Golden State will play the Cleveland Cavaliers on Christmas Day, but that road trip in the Eastern Conference looks tough. 20-0 looks like a realistic target, but the Raptors and Pacers will certainly test the resolve of the Warriors in a week’s time so enjoy the run while it lasts before focus switches back to the ultimate aim.
