The Santa Cruz Warriors announced Tuesday that the team has acquired 6-foot-10-inch big man Mac Koshwal, trading away the rights to forward Dominque Sutton.
Koshwal, 28, comes to Surf City after playing 15 games with the Bakersfield Jam this year. Playing 22.3 minutes per game, the Sudanese big man has averaged 4.6 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists on 52.5 percent shooting.
Growing up in Chicago, IL, Koshwal averaged a double-double in each of his three high school seasons playing at Boys to Men Academy in Chicago. He went to play three seasons for Chicago’s DePaul University, averaging 16.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 1.8 steals in his final year as a junior.
Declaring for the 2010 NBA Draft, Koshwal went undrafted, but later played for the Detroit Pistons in Summer League. Koshwal moved on to sign with Spain’s La Laguna Socas Canaries basketball club, averaging 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in 25 games played.
Entering the 2011 NBA D-League Draft, Koshwal was drafted by the Bakersfield Jam with the 8th overall pick. His contract, however, was terminated before the start of the regular season. In 2012, Koshwal joined the New Orleans Pelicans in Summer League, after which point he was once again re-aquired and waived by Bakersfield. In 2013, Koshwal signed a training camp deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, but he was waived after three preseason games.
Koshwal, yet again, was picked up by Bakersfield during the 2013-14 season, only this time he was not waived. Over the course of 49 games that year with the Jam, Koshwal averaged 7.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists. He stayed on 2014-15 season, averaging 10.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.5 steals in 51 games.
In an effort to make space for Koshwal, Jarred Shaw was unfortunately waived by Santa Cruz. Shaw, 25, was a 6-foot-10-inch PF/C that played in 17 games for the Warriors. In 19 minutes per game, Shaw was averaging 8.9 points and 4.5 rebounds on 56.8 percent shooting.
The news of Shaw being waived comes as a surprise considering Santa Cruz most recently drafted Shaw with the 18th overall pick in the 2015 NBA D-League Draft. Adding to the surprise is the fact that Santa Cruz also re-quired their 2015 6th round pick, Terrance Drisdom, following the decision to trade away point guard Juwan Staten.
Shaw’s departure makes sense, however, seeing as Santa Cruz would have had one too many big men on the roster with Daniel Orton and Anthony Vereen already clogging the paint. Golden State Warriors rookie Kevon Looney is also with Santa Cruz, making his NBA hardwood debut on Tuesday against the Idaho Stampede.
Santa Cruz is currently 10-12 in the standings after suffering a two-game losing streak.
