The Warriors looked like they were on their way to a big quarter after they opened up with a Harrison Barnes dunk followed by a Klay Thompson basket, but they weren’t able to get any separation from the Suns. Phoenix made Golden State work for their shots, but the Warriors still shot 50% from the field. Phoenix shot even better from the field, hitting 52.4% of their shots early on. Stephen Curry‘s 12 first quarter points kept the Warriors from falling behind and none of his baskets were more spectacular than his three-pointer off glass from the corner. The Warriors managed to win the quarter 29-28.
After going back and forth in the first quarter, the Warriors took over in the second. Former Sun Leandro Barbosa gave the Warriors 8 points off the bench. The Warriors built up their lead–on the strength of their Splash Brothers–largely due to a 14-0 run. Curry was firing from everywhere and Andre Iguodala was putting on an equally as fantastic display of bench-dancing. The Warriors won the quarter 28-15.
Curry led another high-powered attack for the Warriors. It looked like the Warriors were finally going to get their separation as they pushed the lead all the way up to 22 points. The Suns picked up the pace and tried to match baskets with the Warriors. Mirza Teletovic was able to put some points on the board and helped Phoenix cut the deficit to 11. The Warriors won the high-paced quarter 34-32.
The fourth quarter was a slow one, as the Warriors were able to ward Phoenix off throughout the period. Golden State’s bench was able to keep the distance between themselves and the opposition. Once again, Curry didn’t play in the fourth quarter. The highlight of the lazy period was Steve Kerr inserting Kevon Looney into the game with several minutes left. Looney missed a hook shot in the lane for his first professional miss, but then banked in a three in the following possession.
Curry finished just short of his third triple-double of the season, scoring 26 points and adding 9 assists and rebounds. Thompson scored 24 points.
