The Warriors’ five best free agent signings ever
2. Rick Barry
The Golden State Warriors re-signed a familiar face who would lead them to the promised land in 1975.
Rick Barry is not only one of the greatest Warriors in franchise history, but one of the best basketball players to step on the court.
This entry might be cheating as well, but if you let Lee and Marciulionis slide and are still reading, then you should be fine with this one. Barry was drafted by the San Francisco Warriors where he played the first two seasons of his career. He then left to join the Oakland Oaks of the ABA. He’d stay in that league for four seasons.
He was disgruntled yet effective in the ABA. The New York Nets released Barry and he re-signed with the (now) Golden State Warriors. He would dominate over the next six seasons in the Bay Area.
In his second stint with the Warriors, Barry averaged nearly 24 points per game, adjusting his game as his athleticism dwindled.
In 1974-75, Barry averaged 30.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists, and 2.9 steals per game. He shot over 46 percent from the field and better than 90 percent from the free throw line with his iconic underhand shot.
His incredible totals from the season remained nearly the same as Golden State made their amazing postseason run. He led the Warriors to an improbable sweep over the Washington Bullets, a team that won 12 more games than them in the regular season. For his efforts, Barry was named MVP.
