Golden State Warriors rookie guard Patrick McCaw has the opportunity of a lifetime in the opening round against the Portland Trail Blazers.

More from Warriors News

When Bob Myers and the Golden State Warriors brought in Patrick McCaw in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft, it became clear from the beginning that the team had struck gold. Somehow, the team had managed to find another gem and rotational piece in the second round of all places. For a team that was coming off two straight NBA Finals appearances, it was a bit of a coup to see them add another piece with potential.

From the minute McCaw hit the floor at the Las Vegas Summer League, it was clear that he had a future with the Warriors. While he’s far from a finished product and has plenty to grow as a player in this league, the team has to be pleased with what they’ve gotten out of him thus far.

Steve Kerr has given him starts and has trusted him in key situations this season. He’s going to need him again in the first round against the Portland Trail Blazers. With Matt Barnes still on the shelf, it’s likely going to open up more minutes for the rookie.

If his season has been any indication to this point, it’s that the moment will not be too big for him. In fact, getting him minutes now against the Trail Blazers will only make him more comfortable as the Warriors hopefully advance through the playoffs.

Sure, there have been plenty of rookies that have been on playoff teams, but how many of them are second-round picks and have gotten a chance at rotational minutes? It just doesn’t happen that quick in their rookie seasons typically.

This could very well end up being the launching point for his career and a place for him to make a name for himself. Championship teams have that one key contributor that isn’t one of the superstars that steps up each season. McCaw could be that guy as a rookie in this league.
