Drake’s “Summer Sixteen”

Drake is a big Golden State Warriors fan. Well, he’s a big fan of anyone who is good, but especially the Warriors. Throughout the season, he went to games and he hung out with them afterwards.

The megastar artist is friends with many of the Warriors. He’s close with Stephen and Ayesha Curry. He’s also developed relationships with Draymond Green and Kevin Durant.

One of the cool perks of being really good at basketball is that rappers want to name drop you in a song. Drake has done it to all three of those hoopers and the real Chef Curry. He loves to give shoutouts and compare himself to the game’s best.

In January of 2016, Drake dropped the promotional single “Summer Sixteen.” It was a hit (obviously). In fact, he even named his subsequent tour after that song.

In that track, Drake repeats that he’s “looking for revenge.” That’s what the Warriors were doing. And guess what? They got it.

Golden State got their revenge on the Cleveland Cavaliers after LeBron James’ squad defeated them in 7 games. That’s what they were looking for. Early in the season, Green told ESPN that he wanted to “annihilate” the Cavs if given the opportunity. Coincidentally, Green’s name is included in Drake’s song.

The Warriors need to blast that song. Maybe they can make a phone call to Aubrey Graham and ask him to rewrite some of it to fit their story. Like how E-40 changed “Choices” to fit a Warriors theme, except better. In the song Drake says he’s looking for revenge “all Summer Sixteen.” Well, that revenge came in Summer Seventeen.

It’d be great if the Champagne Papi himself showed up and performed. But playing a recording of it will do. Even if it’s just the instrumental part, people will get it.

They got their revenge.
