With the Houston Rockets going out and getting Chris Paul, the Golden State Warriors suddenly have a little more competition at the top of the Western Conference. The Rockets are trying to shift the balance of power in the west and give themselves a chance to compete for an NBA Championship.
They assembled a fantastic roster last season, but it wasn’t enough to get past the San Antonio Spurs. Adding a point guard like Paul alongside James Harden is either going to be a bit of a mismatch or turn into something fantastic under Mike D’Antoni’s offense. It also begs the question — who is the biggest threat to the Golden State Warriors?
With the Clippers heading back to rebuilding mode, the Utah Jazz firmly planted in the middle until Gordon Hayward makes a decision and the Oklahoma City Thunder a one-man show for the time being, the Warriors really only have a couple of contenders to their throne in the conference.

Right now conventional wisdom points to either the Rockets or Spurs. The Spurs with a healthy Kawhi Leonard certainly makes any series between the two far more interesting. The Rockets and Warriors have had a lot of playoff history, but adding Chris Paul will change that dynamic as well.
What about a third option? If the Minnesota Timberwolves with the addition of Jimmy Butler are able to take that next step, they have the youth and the star power in place to become the next great team in the west. Andrew Wiggins, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jimmy Butler have the potential to be something special. That’s a young team on the rise ready to do big things. So, who is currently the biggest threat to the Warriors?
With free agency set to begin this week, the landscape of the league is going to change even further. The Warriors have got every team rethinking the way they build their teams and new contenders will rise out of the mix.
