The Golden State Warriors have decided to let two-time NBA champion James Michael McAdoo become an unrestricted free agent.

The Golden State Warriors only have a handful of players under contract for next season. They probably have some sort of plan in place in which they’ve prioritized players. Once the clock hits midnight this weekend, they will be making official offers to some players.

Stephen Curry will get the first phone call. Kevin Durant, though he said he isn’t going to sign until the end of July, will get another. Andre Iguodala, who is reportedly open to signing elsewhere, will be at the top of the Warriors’ list.

James Michael McAdoo probably isn’t. The Warriors are not tendering the qualifying offer to McAdoo thus making him an unrestricted free agent. The Warriors won’t get a chance to match an offer he signs.

McAdoo has been on the Warriors for three years. He’s averaged 3.0 points and 1.7 rebounds per game over his career. He’s only played in 108 out of a possible 246 regular season games.

The Warriors are OK with letting him become a free agent. It’s hard to imagine that there is a huge market for the big man. He won’t be getting any large contracts.

McAdoo has been on both of the Warriors’ championship teams. He also won a ring with the Santa Cruz Warriors. He was a favorite of head coach Steve Kerr.

He would, at times, get playoff minutes in crucial moments. Warriors Twitter would erupt when he’d walk to the scorer’s table. He would play in spots when Golden State should have turned to its stars.

McAdoo could be serviceable in a bigger role. He’s shown flashes of being a strong rebounder, especially on the offensive end. His skill set limits him offensively at the power forward position and he’s a little undersized for the center spot, but he is quick enough to play a small ball five in the right units.

The Warriors will not make McAdoo a priority. If they can’t find anyone else to take small contracts then perhaps they’ll reach out to him. Don’t expect them to, though.
