Was Stephen Curry in Russell Westbrook’s MVP commercial?
Stephen Curry, the best point guard in all of basketball, was featured in Jordan brand’s Russell Westbrook MVP commercial.
Russell Westbrook is the NBA’s Most Valuable Player this year. Though, for full transparency, I would have given my vote to James Harden, Westbrook is more than worthy and I think he was insane all year long. His season was amazing so he absolutely deserves the award.
Westbrook also showed a different side of him during his acceptance speech. Normally reserved and, even, cold, the Oklahoma City point guard was softer. A guy who plays with incredibly high energy and intensity let his guard down and spent a moment just being the real him, not some angry version.
Despite that, his brand still has to keep up a consistent image. Westbrook is a Jordan brand athlete and after his MVP announcement they released a commercial. It was a pretty cool animated spot, but there was one very interesting portion.

At this point in the video, Westbrook drives on that lone defender and dunks on him. That fact that he’s flashing his explosiveness isn’t the strange part. It’s the lone defender under the rim.

The helpless defender with no chance of stopping the Brodie looks…familiar, doesn’t he? The light skin, the haircut, the goatee? Even the wristband and the stripe down the side of his blue-ish jersey.
It’s clear that this is a shot at Stephen Curry. The resemblance is uncanny. The writers and illustrators over at Jordan brand did that intentionally.
This isn’t the first time that it seems like one of Westbrook’s commercials took a shot at Curry. In another commercial called “Make Space,” the Thunder point guard’s hype man throws shade on the two-time MVP. He proclaims, “what y’all expect? Another choir boy running point.” That seems pretty obvious.
Curry is Westbrook’s rival. They’ve gone head-to-head for years, but lately Curry has gotten the best of him. It’s been a pretty one-sided rivalry.

Jordan brand can keep throwing shade at Steph Curry all they want in their commercials. It won’t make Westbrook’s resumé any better. It also won’t make him the best point guard in basketball. And it won’t bring Kevin Durant back either.
It’s great that he won one MVP, but Curry has two. He also still needs to catch up in the important category: championship titles.
