Golden State Warriors: Could Marreese Speights return to the Bay?
The Golden State Warriors have one roster spot open. Former-Warrior and current free agent Marreese Speights could be an option for them.
The Golden State Warriors have one roster spot left. After making their moves early in free agency, they haven’t really made an effort to fill that spot up. They might not be interested in doing so because of the economics behind it.

Of course, the Warriors’ top priority should be bringing back JaVale McGee, if they do want to fill that spot. He had a great year for the champions last season, completely rejuvenating his career. His ability to finish off lobs and grab rebounds energized the team as they went on their title run.
Another option for Golden State would be Marreese Speights. The veteran big man is a free agent after a decent stint with the Los Angeles Clippers. Speights was in talks with the Atlanta Hawks, but those fell through.
The Warriors know that Speights can fit into what they do. He was effective in his three years with Golden State. He was able to space the floor for the bench unit.
Speights is prone to mental lapses. He sometimes gets tunnel vision and forces up shots instead of moving the ball and getting better looks. Also, he’s vulnerable on the defensive end.
If he were to sign for the minimum, it might be worth a look. He fits in with the personality of the team. He can space the floor like Omri Casspi, he can play a small center if Golden State needs him to unlike the newcomer.
Speights became a fan-favorite over his three years with the Warriors. He became a cult icon. Also, he could knock down the occasionally three-pointer and having more three-point shooting, especially at a low price, is never a bad thing.
