Adam Silver believes NBA teams should visit White House

NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes the team that wins the championship should visit the White House regardless of politics.

As teams across all professional sports landscapes in the United States continue to win championships, the discussion of visiting the White House is going to be a big one. Recent politics has really created for conversation about whether or not a team is obligated to visit the White House. Since the Golden State Warriors are defending champions of the NBA, they’re now the team up for the discussion.

Much has been made already about whether or not the team should go visit Donald Trump. At this time more than ever, players across sports have used their status as a platform to have their voice be heard in hopes of speaking for those who are not able to. So when the topic of whether or not they should visit Washington D.C. comes up, it’s a bit of a tough situation.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver weighed in on the topic in an interview with C.J. McCollum for The Players’ Tribune. Silver believes that players should visit the White House for what the office holds and means to this country regardless of politics. At the same time however, he understands and fully respects the rights of players if they choose not to go.

While multiple championship teams have visited the White House since this most recent election, there have been players that have skipped the invite. The Warriors have always been a team that has tried to be out in front of social issues.

The team is ultimately going to decide to do what they feel is best and most will respect them for their decision one way or the other. Silver has every right to his beliefs and offers his players the same respect in return. This is a conversation that is going to continue on for some time and the Warriors will probably be involved again should they win more championships.
