If everyone thought the big NBA offseason news was over and the slow part of the year had begun, it’s time to think again. On Friday, Brian Windhorst broke the news that Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the team and wants the chance to go spread his wings elsewhere. That immediately left Golden State Warriors fans probably thinking that their path toward another title just got a little bit easier.
After Windhorst dropped the bombshell, Adrian Wojnarowski dropped some big news of his own. Of the destinations that Irving would prefer to go to, the San Antonio Spurs are one of those teams he wouldn’t mind playing for.
Of course, the Spurs are considered by many to be the biggest threat to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference. Adding Irving to Kawhi Leonard would make them even more dangerous as a team.
Right now, the Spurs have an aging Tony Parker, Patty Mills and Dejounte Murray. Parker is rehabbing after a grueling quad injury this past year. Mills has really developed over the years while the team is hopeful Murray can blossom into a great player as well.
However, adding Irving would be a big upgrade here. He would provide a little more consistency offensively from the point guard spot and give the Spurs a scorer that could go off for some big numbers.
One would have to assume that learning under Gregg Popovich would give him the type of coaching he hasn’t had yet in his career. What San Antonio would have to give up for him however would remain to be seen.

If Irving does want to be dealt from Cleveland, the Cavaliers are going to make sure they get the best package in return for him. If that is the Spurs, then the Warriors are going to end up having their hands full in the playoffs.
A healthy Leonard gives the Warriors trouble already and Irving has certainly never made life easy on Golden State. Many teams have made moves this year to try and take down Golden State and strengthen their roster. The Spurs adding Irving to their roster would perhaps be the biggest move yet.
