With a roster that is mostly locked up, the Golden State Warriors really only needed to address the backup center position. It came down to two choices, let one of the young guys take a stab at it or go with the proven method with JaVale McGee.
Well, it looks like it is going to be the latter in this instance. On Thursday, ESPN’s Chris Haynes reported that McGee was returning to the Warriors on a one-year deal. This means Golden State has successfully kept together their core for another run.
For those that have been following the McGee saga, it should come as no surprise here that this deal ended up happening. As money dried up and free agency wore on, it became abundantly clear that he wasn’t going to get the money elsewhere that he wanted.
He’ll have to settle for the minimum with the Warriors, as that is the most they can offer now. However, he has a great chance at another ring and can once again bet on himself in free agency next year.
McGee has bounced around the league during his career and having a chance to stay with one team isn’t a bad option either. He was very productive in his limited minutes last year and provided quite the energy boost. This is a move that will also allow for the young big men on the team to continue to get development time in Santa Cruz. No one has to be rushed into action that isn’t ready for it and the team can continue to evaluate what they have.
The fans at Oracle Arena quickly took to McGee and he became a crowd favorite right away. Now, he’s back and the Warriors have completed one of their best offseasons in franchise history during a crucial year.
