The Golden State Warriors’ statement jersey will feature “The Town” and a tree in celebration of Oakland. It’s a design that was long overdue.

As the new Nike designs start to become public, either officially or unofficially, there has been mixed receptions. They have gotten some right, but they’ve also had some misses in their first year of crafting NBA jerseys under the company’s new contract with the league. When you’re creating at least four sets of gameday apparel for each team, that’s bound to happen.

Luckily, they’ve gotten it right for the Golden State Warriors. In addition to the jerseys that we recognize as their traditional home and road uniforms, the team will also have two other alternates. One of them is called a “statement” uniform.

Thanks to the release of NBA 2K, teams’ uniforms have leaked early. The new duds will officially be announced tonight with Nike athletes Kevin Durant and Draymond Green sporting them at a press conference in Los Angeles, according to The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson. They will be the jersey of choice on Saturdays, per Thompson’s story.

The Warriors needed this jersey. With “The Town” emblazoned across the top of a circle that surrounds the city of Oakland’s tree logo, the jersey is a clean and beautiful representation of the city the champs play in. It is black with yellow trim around the neckline, white script, and a grey tree.

As a Warriors fan that was born and raised in San Francisco, I say that this jersey is a long time coming. The team represents the entire Bay Area yet their uniforms have not always reflected that. There has been an imbalance.

Two years ago, the Warriors wore gorgeous “The City” jerseys in reference to their San Francisco days. The team also wore other jerseys that said “San Francisco” across them less than 10 years ago. They’ve done a great job representing the fans from that side of the Bay Bridge.

It’s about time Oakland got love, too. Though the Warriors are leaving Oakland, the team still belongs to them just as much as it does San Francisco or any other part of the Bay Area. They deserve this uniform.

Oakland fans are some of the best around. Just look at Raiders game and how they have always shown up to support the silver and black, even when they were terrible. Despite its mainstream reputation, Oakland is an amazing city with a rich culture that is both unique in respect to San Francisco and complementary to the neighboring city in a way that makes the Bay Area the best place to be.

Though my heart belongs to “The City,” here’s to “The Town.”
