Conclusion

Young should be the Warriors’ backup shooting guard because he’s more aggressive on offense, he provides the Warriors’ much-needed length and his confidence never wavers. McCaw may have the advantage on defense but it is clear that his aggressiveness and confidence are not on Young’s level.

This will be a fluid situation throughout the season and there is no doubt that Young needs to play better defense to keep his spot as backup shooting guard. The Warriors won their championships because of a free-flowing offense and lockdown defense.

The lockdown defense is not happening yet and some of it is attributed to Young’s lack of defensive awareness. He is allowing his opponents to cut backdoor for layups/dunks or losing them, coming off screens for open jumpers. If the Warriors envision themselves as a lockdown defensive team, this needs to be fixed.

Young will it turn it around on defense because it will be demanded of him. He does not want to be seen as the weak link in this championship juggernaut, he wants to be seen as an asset. Plus, he is in a contract year so he wants to prove to everyone he can play at both ends.

For all these reasons, Young should be the backup shooting guard and the Warriors will thrive because of it.
