Quinn Cook continuing to prove himself

As I mentioned earlier, Quinn Cook has spent extensive time with the Golden State Warriors to fill in for Stephen Curry, and the Santa Cruz Warriors have unfortunately gone 1-3 in that time without Cook. Digging even further, the Sea Dubs are actually 2-6 without Cook all season.

I can’t overstate the significance of having Cook on the Warriors. To list just a few of his minor league accolades, Cook is a 2-time D-League All-Star (2016, 2017), the 2017 D-League All-Star Game MVP and the 2016 D-League Rookie of the Year.

He is commonly regarded as one of the best players in the G League — if not THE best player in the G League this season. In my humble opinion, he’s done more than enough to prove he’s worth a full-time, guaranteed contract with a major league squad.

In 11 games this season with Santa Cruz, Cook has averaged 25.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 8.1 assists and 1.3 steals in 35.4 minutes per game. He’s also been shooting 50.8 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from behind the arc and 92.7 percent from the free throw line.

In seven games with Golden State, the 6-foot-2 floor general has averaged 3.9 points, 1.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 10.8 minutes, shooting 55.0 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from behind the arc and 100 percent (2-of-2) from the charity stripe.

He was on the sidelines in Santa Cruz when the team faced the Memphis Hustle this past Friday, and he played in the team’s game against the Westchester Knicks on Saturday. According to head coach Aaron Miles, Cook’s past couple appearances in Surf City could just be a way of “conserving some of the days,” a reference to the limited 45-days a 2-way contract player is able to spend with a major league club.

Per Connor Letorneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, Cook will rejoin Golden State ahead of the team’s road game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday.

It’s unknown as to how Golden State will handle Cook’s 45-day limit with the upcoming 7-game homestand in Oakland, but Santa Cruz is scheduled to play four games over that time span — three of which will take place away from Kaiser Permanente Arena.

Hopefully Curry is back to full health by then.
