Why do the Warriors Rack Up so Many Technical Fouls?
By Andrew Ites
The Warriors have been called for the most technical fouls of any NBA team this season. Why is this happening, and what can Golden State do to fix this problem?
There has been a lot of talk about the referees’ relations with the NBA players over the past week, and Draymond Green has been very vocal in that conversation. He believes the communication between the refs and players has never been worse, and that the NBA should bring in an entirely new crop of referees to fix this situation.
The Warriors lead the league in technical fouls this season. Additionally, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant are the top two players in technical fouls as they’ve been t’ed up a combined 19 times.
Normally, the best players are thought to get the most calls in the NBA, but the Warriors don’t feel like that’s been the case this season. Draymond Green has always been at the top of the league in technicals with his passionate style of play, and Kevin Durant has tried to become a bit of an enforcer himself this season, which has led to a large increase in technical fouls for him personally.

Golden State needs to tighten up these issues moving forward. They can afford to give teams a couple of extra free throws during the regular season because they are more talented than everyone else, but those points could be the difference in the playoffs where the margins are much slimmer.
The Warriors can’t do anything about how the referees call their games, but they can control how they react to calls that don’t go their way. Steve Kerr is fantastic at relating to players, and he needs to sit his team down to tell them that even the slightest overreactions to a missed call are unacceptable.
Golden State hasn’t had many issues this year as they are cruising to home-court advantage in the playoffs, so they would be wise to really focus in on this problem that has the potential of costing them in the playoffs.
