Playing at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Friday, the Santa Cruz Warriors lost 116-113 to the Iowa Wolves in extraordinary fashion.

Resuming their 7-game homestand on Friday, the Santa Cruz Warriors — G League affiliate of the reigning NBA champion Golden State Warriors — lost 116-113 to the Iowa Wolves on Friday at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

With the game tied at 111-111 and just 17.5 seconds left in the game, the Sea Dubs attempted to inbound the ball underneath their basket. Being unable to do so within the 5-second allotted time, the team pulled a Chris Webber, calling a timeout when they had no more available.

The Warriors argued that they had attempted to use their one remaining reset timeout, which is only used to advance the ball to half court in the situation a team wants to conserve time by not having to inbound the ball from the opposite side of the floor.

Santa Cruz was assessed an “Excess Timeout Technical,” awarding the Wolves with a technical free throw. Iowa’s Melo Trimble made the free throw, breaking the tie. The Warriors attempted to play the foul game, but they strangely opted to go for the quick 2-pointer without a timeout.

The entire situation resulted in a quick five points for the Wolves over the span of nine seconds, which ultimately lost the game for Surf City.

The loss becomes even more disappointing when you factor in how Quinn Cook‘s season-high 43 points basically went to waste. He also had three rebounds and 11 assists on 16-of-27 shooting from the field, 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc and 6-of-6 shooting from the free throw line.

Damion Lee dropped in 21 points and seven rebounds on 9-of-12 shooting, while Damian Jones posted 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks on 7-of-11 shooting. Avry Holmes had his best game of the season, scoring 16 points in 25 minutes off the bench.
