Damian Jones drops in the jumper

Damian Jones is averaging 15.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.1 blocks in 30.5 minutes. He’s shooting 68.1 percent from from the field and 71.3 percent from the free throw line.

As impressive as Jones has been this season, I’ll admit that the midrange jumper he converted at the 0:19 mark in the video above took me by surprise. I’ve certainly been aware of his ability to knock those types of shots down, but I’m going to have to agree with Drew Shiller on this one: Jones took that shot rather confidently.

What’s even more impressive is Jones essentially took a step back when he faced up to the basket, using his right foot as his pivot foot. Although it’s important to be able to comfortable pivoting on either foot, I know it’s much more natural for a right-handed player to utilize their left foot as their primary pivot foot.

It’s also much more natural to execute a jump shot by stepping into it. Jones stepped away, but kept his center of gravity balanced, allowing him to square up perfectly to the basket.
