Southerland finds himself wide open

This piece wouldn’t be complete without a highlight play from Thursday’s Player of the Game, James Southerland.

In 30 games this season, Southerland is averaging 10.4 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 28.4 minutes. He’s also shooting 42.9 percent from the field, 37.0 percent from behind the arc and 76.0 percent from the free throw line.

Southerland recently joined the starting lineup following the departure of Georges Niang. He’s provided some much needed scoring, acting as a stretch big man for Santa Cruz.

Starting at the 0:04 mark: Southerland simply looked to be cutting baseline in order to free up some space for Shepard to work. Instead, Southerland’s defender opts to trap Shepard, allowing Southerland to cut to the basket for the easy dunk.

Credit Shepard for staying calm in the double team and knowing where to find Southerland.
