Santa Cruz Warriors: Quinn Cook’s 41 sparks OT win vs. Lakers

The Santa Cruz Warriors made headlines Sunday night with their 131-127 overtime win vs. the South Bay Lakers at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

The Santa Cruz Warriors, G League affiliate of the Golden State Warriors, put on quite the show Sunday night at Kaiser Permanente Arena, defeating the South Bay Lakers 131-127 in overtime.

Following a solid 34-30 start to the night, the Sea Dubs seemingly lost their traction midway through the game, giving up a 34-20 second quarter and a 64-56 lead for the Lakers going into halftime.

However, the Warriors bounced back strong coming out the locker room, scoring 40 points in the third quarter to earn a narrow 96-92 lead going into the fourth. South Bay won the last 12 minutes in regulation 28-24, forcing overtime with a 120-120 tie.

That’s where Warriors two-way contract player, Quinn Cook, took over, beginning the two-minute overtime period with the hoop and the harm. He successfully converted the and-1 at the free throw line, where he would later score the team’s last four points in the final four seconds to secure the upset victory for the Sea Dubs.

By the end of the night, Cook had scored a game-high 41 points to go with two rebounds, six assists and one block. He played a total of 40 minutes, shooting 14-of-20 from the field, 5-of-7 from behind the arc and a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Terrence Jones nearly recorded a triple-double before fouling out in overtime, tallying 31 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. He showed just exactly why he was chosen to represent his country in the NBA G League International Challenge, shooting 12-of-18 from the field, 2-of-4 from long range and 5-of-13 from the free throw line.

Still on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, Dubs affiliate player Damian Jones posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds on a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. He added three assists, two steals and one block in a mere 28 minutes of play.

Winston Shepard led the second unit in scoring with 13 points, three rebounds and three assists on 6-of-9 shooting. Damion Lee also scored in double-digits off the bench, dropping in 11 points, five rebounds and two steals.

Warriors guard Patrick McCaw was also on assignment, contributing six points, two assists and one steal in 25 minutes. He shot 2-of-11 from the field, 0-of-5 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

The Sea Dubs improve their regular season record to 19-17, bringing the South Bay Lakers another half game behind the first seed in the Western Conference. Positioned in seventh place, the Santa Cruz Warriors still have quite a long way to go before they get back into postseason contention.
