Steve Kerr signed a multi-year contract extension with the Golden State Warriors this weekend.
Golden State Warriors fans will be elated to hear that the team signed head coach Steve Kerr to a well deserved, multi-year contract extension this weekend, securing his future with the Dubs for years to come.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the initial agreement, while Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area personally confirmed the extension with Kerr via phone call.
According to a separate report from Poole, the extension will at least double the annual salary of Kerr’s current five-year, $25 million contract, and the deal will extend Kerr’s tenure as head coach at least three more years.
If Poole’s source is correct, that would put Kerr’s new extension around $10 million per year. As of today, Gregg Popovich remains the highest paid coach in the league as he heads into the final season of his five-year, $55 million deal.
While Kerr didn’t confirm the exact dollar amount with Poole, he reportedly “implied it was less than that.” Kerr also didn’t confirm the exact length of the extension, but he’s expected to at least coach through the first two years of the team’ tenure at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Kerr, 52, is an eight-time NBA champion, winning five rings as a player and three titles as Golden State’s head coach. Over the course of his four years with the Warriors, he’s established an official regular season record of 265-63, as well as a postseason record of 63-20.
He’s also known for his time as a general manager with the Phoenix Suns, in addition to his career as a television analyst for Turner Network Television (TNT).
He’s unfortunately continued to struggle through health issues related to the multiple back surgeries he underwent early in his coaching career, though he’s in a much better place health-wise going into next season.
