Warriors: Best Coaches in Golden State Team History
By Andrew Ites
2. Al Attles
Al Attles is the longest-tenured coach in franchise history, and he led the Warriors to their first championship since their move to the Bay Area.
The Warriors went 557-518 (51.8%) in the regular season during the Attles era with a playoff record of 31-30.
Golden State went to the playoffs in six of Attles’ first seven full years with the Warriors, and they made it to the Conference Finals three times, including the championship season in 1975.
Things became a bit stale during Attles’ final seven seasons as the Warriors didn’t make the playoffs from 1977-1983.
Attles was one of the first African-American coaches in NBA history, and he began his Warriors tenure as a player in 1960 before transitioning to a player/coach role in 1970.
Attles’ legacy will live on forever for helping break the color barrier in coaching and bringing Golden State it’s first title.
