Warriors: Klay Thompson’s dad says he will be in Golden State for life
By Andrew Ites
As Klay Thompson enters the final year of his contract, his father made a guarantee that his son will stay with the Warriors long-term.
Klay Thompson’s contract is set to expire after the upcoming season, and he would become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2019 if the Warriors are unable to sign him to a contract extension.
Extension negotiations have been going on this summer, but the two sides have yet to reach a deal.
Klay’s father Mychal has been pretty vocal about his son’s contract situation over the past few months.
Earlier this offseason, Mychal Thompson said that Klay will wait to re-sign with Golden State until his contract expires.
Financially, that would be the correct decision for Klay. Thompson is eligible for a five-year deal worth $102 million if he would re-sign this offseason, but he could get a five-year contract worth $188 million if he plays out the final year of his current deal and re-signs next offseason.
While it’s clear Mychal has his son’s best interest in mind, he may have taken some leverage away from Klay and his agent in contract negotiations by telling reporters that his son will retire a Warrior.
"“Oh yeah, you can mark it down,” said Mychal Thompson at the kickoff party for the Thompson Family Foundation’s first annual charity golf event. “Klay’s going to retire in the Warriors’ uniform. He’s going to play at Chase Center (the Warriors’ new arena, opening in 2019), and he’s not going to be at Chase Center as a visiting player, he’s going to be a Warrior for the next seven or eight years.”"

This came just days after Steph Curry told Bill Simmons a similar comment about his own long-term future in Golden State.
All indications point to Klay signing a long-term deal with the Warriors, and The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson has even reported that Thompson is willing to take some sort of pay cut to keep this team together.
However, there have been rumors that Klay would consider going to Los Angeles and following his father’s footsteps in Laker land. And that possibility has become even stronger after LeBron James’ arrival in L.A.
With that being said, it seems pretty clear that Klay is extremely happy in Golden State and he’s content to sacrifice some of his potential salary to continue winning championships with the best team in basketball.
The only questions that remain are when this deal will get done and how much money will Joe Lacob be paying this roster in 2019.
