Golden State Warriors: Why is the number 13 significant?
It’s October and we’re 13 days away from the Tip-Off of the NBA regular season, but we’re gonna go into a time machine for this article.
The day is November 4th and the Golden State Warriors just lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. Not only was the loss surprising but there was something else that jumped off the box score. Stephen Curry went 0-10 from the 3 point line in the game.
This was the first time in a regular season game that Curry didn’t make a three since November 11, 2014, in a loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Outside of that, Steph had been on one of the greatest shooting stretches in NBA history.
The next game after the loss to the Lakers, Golden State went back home to play Anthony Davis and the New Orleans Pelicans. This was the night that Chef Curry broke the record for most 3 pointers in a game.
Steph came out in that game firing. He began by shooting 3/4 from downtown in the first quarter. He then came out in the second quarter hotter than the sidewalk in Phoenix in July. This included three straight 3-pointers as part of a 17-0 run by the Dubs. He would finish the second quarter 3/4 again and overall 6/8 for the half from beyond the arc. Warriors lead 63-49.
Now it’s the third quarter, the quarter that the Warriors dominated. Steph continued his historic run by opening the period with another 3-pointer. The Pelicans would close the gap before Curry hit his 4th three of the quarter to bring the lead to six at the end of the quarter.
It’s the fourth quarter and Steph is 3 away from tying his record own record of 12 3-pointers. This record was shared between Curry and Kobe Bryant. With 6:48 left, he checks back into the game and Oracle Arena becomes loud enough to shake the stadium next to them.
Curry stays quiet until 3:34 left then an offensive explosion happened. He hit two more threes in the span of 40 seconds. Then after a Buddy Hield miss, Draymond Green has the ball on the right wing. Kevin Durant set an off-ball screen for the Chef. Draymond gives the ball to Steph who saw the amount of space only he and Klay Thompson need to shoot.
Finally, with 2:42 left on the clock, the record that he once shared with Kobe was now his own. Curry hit the fading, off-balance 26-foot shot from the top of the key. In perfect Curry fashion, he backpedaled and strutted his way down the sideline as his fans cheered behind him. This was followed by a yell and a high-five with KD.
Steph would finish the game with 46 points, 3 rebound, 5 assists while shooting 13/17 from three. Warriors also won that game 116-106. On this night, Wardell Stephen Curry broke the record for most made threes in a regular season game.
