DeMarcus Cousins plays the mentor role for the Golden State Warriors
Despite being sidelined while rehabbing his Achilles injury, DeMarcus Cousins has taken on an unlikely responsibility as he awaits his return to the court: the role of mentor.
In the Golden State Warriors’ first preseason action against the Minnesota Timberwolves, young center Damian Jones walked towards the sideline as a timeout was called, and promptly received words of advice from his fellow veteran teammates. One of the voices lending advice to the young Warriors player: DeMarcus Cousins.
It was a similar story in Seattle, where the Warriors brought NBA action against the Sacramento Kings for the city’s first taste of basketball in ten years.
Again, Cousins did not pay a single minute as he remained on the sideline during his rehab process but was more than available to bring any help needed, even if that means mentoring the youth like Jones, Jordan Bell, and Kevon Looney.
Until we see Boogie back on the court, we’ll most likely be seeing him continue to advise and guide the young bigs on the Warriors roster.
Playing on a veteran minimum contract and with no real rush to hurry back, it could have been easy for DeMarcus to ultimately focus on getting his body and game back in shape, possibly win a ring come June, then bank on securing a max contract in the summer of 2019.
To this day, those who criticize his decision to move to the Bay believe that is his ultimate course of action.
