Golden State Warriors could legitimately have two MVP finalists
It’s only a few games in, but the Golden State Warriors could legitimately have two MVP finalists. Could Curry and Durant do the unlikely and pull it off?
Through two victories, the Golden State Warriors have proven that they can play awful and still win. They’ve been able to mount comebacks in both their victories, and it’s been because of superstars Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant.
The first two games have strictly been the Curry and Durant show. Green’s added his usual array of stat while Klay has been rather disappointing, averaging just 13 points through his first two games.
While Thompson and Green’s struggles are real, they’re allowed to have some issues if Durant and Curry can put up 30 each game.
In Durant’s first two games, he scored 27 points and then 38 points. In game one, Durant was four assists and two rebounds away from a triple-double, and in the second game, he was three assists and one rebounds shy of the mark. He’s been a complete, playmaking threat this season.
These numbers have grown to be the usual from Durant. The four-time scoring champion has erupted to be arguably the league’s best pure scorer. One of the league’s other elite threats is teammate Stephen Curry who has equally started the season on an absolute tear.

32 points, nine assists and eight rebounds were Curry’s numbers from game one and then similarly scored 31 points in game two including a third-quarter montage against the Jazz. Altogether, Curry has averaged 31.5 points, 8.5 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game.
If those averages keep up like they could, the Dubs could be looking at two MVP finalists on the same team.
While pretty unlikely, it’s far from impossible.
LeBron James, Anthony Davis and James Harden were the 2017-2018 NBA MVP finalists.
James put up over 27 points, nine rebounds and eight assists per game. However, as his usage decreases, James’ MVP chances will also take a hit. Davis and Harden will both be in the conversation again with players like Giannis, Joel Embiid Kawhi Leonard also stepping up to the plate.
In the end, the main argument for the last few seasons hasn’t been the numbers of the player, or else last season the MVP would’ve gone to LeBron James. It’s been clear that the voters are far more concerned about the team’s record.
If the Warriors can figure out a way to win 65+ games in a difficult Western Conference, they should lock up at least one MVP candidate. However, if both can continue putting up unthinkable numbers at over 50% from the field, then there’s no reason they can’t snag two of the three spots.
Health will also come into play, and Curry, who missed 30 games last season, has been injury-prone with his susceptible right ankle. That’ll also be a huge concern for his MVP chances.
First, we need to see if the West can keep these games competitive to continue allowing the stars to shine.
Now, it’s just a waiting game.
