Since he became an MVP in the 2014-15 NBA season, Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors has received an unusual amount of hatred.

Stephen Curry has turned into one of the greatest players of our generation. The Golden State Warriors point guard overcame every obstacle in his way and transformed the league as we know it. So, why is he one of the most hated players in the NBA?

When looking at Curry’s story, it is very much that of an underdog tale. Coming out of college, Steph was seen as a scrawny guard who wasn’t capable of doing anything other than shoot the 3-pointer. Critics said he was too small to be successful in the big leagues and would become a liability on defense.

Then, after Curry began to prove them wrong and show that he could be a force in this league, they changed the narrative again. For the longest time, they said that jump shooting teams couldn’t win a championship. The phrase “Live by the jump shot, die by the jump shot” became a common saying.

Of course, Curry once again shattered these expectations. He broke record after record en route to winning back to back MVP awards and an NBA championship. His shooting took the league by storm, as each NBA team began rapidly attempting to recreate the system that had been formed around Curry’s 3-point shooting ability.

In a span of five years, Curry went from a relatively unknown player with low expectations to one of the faces of the league. His impact has been arguably bigger than any other player in the history of the NBA and he is on pace to achieve more than some of the greatest to every play. Coming up as the underdog, this should be the type of success story that all fans can rally around, right?

Well, for whatever reason, Steph has gotten more than his fair share of hatred. I believe this could be for a few reasons.

For starters, anytime a player is great there will be haters. That’s just how the league works. Whenever someone is undeniably good at something there will always be people ready to tear them down and dimish their accomplishments.

Furthermore, while he has been humble off the court, Steph is anything but humble on the court. Curry isn’t afraid to taunt his opponents during one of his patented heat check moments and this can rub many fans the wrong way. Especially fans of the opposing team. It’s not easy for rival teams to watch as Curry shoots a 3-pointer and turns around before it even goes in.

Lastly, I believe the main reason Curry is hated is that of the fact that nearly everything has gone his way. He has been the beneficiary of an absurd amount of luck that has landed him in the perfect situation.

Whether it be his teams often playing against injured opponents in the playoffs or the sheer fact that the Warriors have somehow managed to obtain four other All-Stars to surround him, Curry is truly in the perfect environment.

Now, are any of these above reasons enough to justify hating a man that has accomplished so much? In my opinion, no. Curry is without a doubt one of the best players to ever suit up and he is on pace for even more greatness. I think it’s time that the haters realize the flaws in their bias and appreciate what they are witnessing before it’s too late.
