Golden State Warriors: Surf City welcome Jaleel Cousins

The Golden State Warriors G-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, have added Jaleel Cousins to their roster. 

Yes, the Warriors this season has been graced with not one Cousins but two. DeMarcus Cousins is with the Golden State Warriors and Jaleel Cousins is set to play with the Santa Cruz Warriors. On today’s edition of TimeOut, Jaleel Cousins’s journey to the Santa Cruz Warriors will be explored.

One statement we hardly hear every day: a basketball player beginning his college basketball career at a community college/ two-year public university. However, that is what Jaleel Cousins did.

After a successful senior year at Spanish Fort High School where he was an ASWA All-State Class 5A, he began his collegiate career at a two-year institution called Navarro College located in Corsicana, Texas.

In his freshman year of college, he scored 3.7 points per game along with 2.9 rebounds shooting 47.6 percent from the field and in his sophomore year, he averaged 7.1 points and 4.8 rebounds. He is in the top five for blocked shots with a total of  31 blocks in his final season with the Navarro College.

Shortly after, the 6-11 center transferred to the University of South Florida where he averaged 2.9 points, 4 steals, 2.6 rebounds and 3 assists shooting 47.1 percent from the field in his junior year.

In his senior year, he averaged 8.5 points, although his field goal percentage dropped slightly to 45.2 percent. He also grabbed 7.9 rebounds per game, with a total of 15 assists, 54 blocks and 23 steals while playing 25.0 minutes per game.

He ranked fourth in blocks and seventh in the American Athletic Conference for rebounding in his senior year. He also had eight double-doubles the most by USF player since the 2007-2008 season. In addition, Cousins became the first player since the 2012-2013 season to have back to back double-double games.

After going undrafted in 2016, he played for the Dallas Mavericks Orlando summer league team where he shot 5.4 points shooting 50% from the field while grabbing 3 rebounds a game.

The Dallas Mavericks signed Cousins on October 17, 2016, however, he was waived on October 22, 2016. Eight days later, the G League affiliate for the Dallas Mavericks the Texas Legends signed Cousins.

He averaged 5 points on 45.3 percent shooting with 3.0 rebounds, 0.3 steals and 0.6 blocks. He was waived on January 29, 2017, and was signed to the Reno Bighorns (now Stockton Kings) the G League affiliate for the Sacremento Kings.

Cousins was signed to the Formosa Dreamers based in Changhua, Taiwan where he averaged 14.8 points on 45 percent shooting to go with 12.4 rebounds 4.0 being offensive rebounds and 8.4 being defensive rebounds.

He then played for the New Orleans Pelicans summer league team this year where he averaged 3.5 points on 6 of 12 shooting along with 3 rebounds. On October 12, 2018, the Golden State Warriors signed Jaleel Cousins to an Exhibit 10 contract.

On October 20, 2018, Cousins was selected as the 49th pick in this year’s G League draft for the Rio Grande Vipers, however, the Santa Cruz Warriors got his rights in a trade. This Saturday, he will suit up for the Santa Cruz Warriors against the Northern Arizona Suns and will continue his journey to the NBA.
