Golden State Warriors: Is Draymond Green to blame for recent slump?
By Tony Pesta
It’s been a long time since the Golden State Warriors struggled like this and Draymond Green might be the one to blame.
The Golden State Warriors are in the midst of one of their worst slumps in recent years. After a 104-92 loss to the San Antonio Spurs, the Warriors have now lost three games in a row. The recent controversy caused by Draymond Green may be the reason for the team’s slump.
In the last five years, the Warriors have only lost three straight games a total of three different times. Once in the 2017-18 regular season, again in the 2016-17 regular season and of course in the 2016 NBA Finals. However, something about this recent stretch seems worse than the others.
Unlike the rest of these cold stretches, there is a clear catalyst that may have started this slump for the Warriors. I am obviously referring to the feud between Draymond Green and Kevin Durant. Despite a few comments from various members of the team showing confidence that this altercation will all blow over, it is clear that Durant and Green’s beef has had some long-lasting effects.
Since Green and Durant got into a heated argument on the bench, the Warriors have dropped four of their last five games. Furthermore, they have lost these games by an average deficit of 10.5 points. This is a rarity for a team as dominant as the Golden State Warriors.
The overall team chemistry has taken a clear hit due to the comments from Green. The Warriors don’t look like them usual selves and don’t seem to be trusting each other on the court.
Now, there are also a few other reasons as to why the Warriors are struggling. For starters, Stephen Curry has missed the last six games and is set to miss at least a few more. Curry is a key piece to the team and without him, they just aren’t as potent on offense.
Furthermore, Green himself has missed a few games. Green was suspended without pay one game because of his comments towards Durant and since then he has been dealing with a toe injury that has caused him to miss two games already.
Sadly, the Warriors schedule isn’t getting any easier with games against the Oklahoma City Thunder and Portland Trailblazers up next. Hopefully, the team can pull through and become stronger at the end of all of this controversy.
