Denver Nuggets ink former Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Nick Young
A member of the Golden State Warriors 2018 Championship roster, Nick Young will now be signing with the Denver Nuggets.
The Denver Nuggets have signed former Golden State Warriors sharpshooter Nick Young using the injury hardship relief exception, according to the Denver Post. Since Young signed in Denver, the Nuggets waived guard Brandon Goodwin.
Swaggy P is a great fit in Denver. Especially with Gary Harris potentially out a month, the Nuggets needed a two-guard to come in and step up, primarily on the offensive side of the ball. Even when Harris’ return, Young will give a different, more dynamic approach offensively.
After deleting a tweet earlier this year implying he wanted to sign in LA, Young has since remained relatively quiet about his next NBA home. Now, the 33-year-old will trade from the warm Bay area to the cold Mile High city of Denver.
For Denver, Young will have one job: score. Without Isaiah Thomas in the lineup yet and with Harris injured, points might be difficult to come by. Young neared 20 points per game with the Lakers just half a decade ago.
Last season, in just 17.4 minutes per game, Young averaged 7.3 points per game, the lowest total of his career. However, in Golden State, his role had changed. He was a complimentary piece to a championship team not the go-to option he’d gotten used to thriving as. One plus is Young saw time in all but two games last season.
Denver is missing Harris for just a few weeks, but they’ll also be missing Paul Millsap for quite some time. Millsap broke his toe and is out indefinitely, giving Young a clear path to hoisting 10+ shots a night.
This was an opportunity Young had to take, and while he almost certainly could’ve rejoined Golden State on a discounted rate, Young won his ring and seems content playing an integral role on a contending team.
The Denver Nuggets are currently 17-9, ranking third in a tough Western Conference. With Golden State just one win ahead of them, the Nuggets are legitimate contenders to the Western Conference throne, yet injuries could easily derail them.
They’ll be hoping Young can supplement some of the lost production from Millsap and Harris.
Either way, we wish Young the best on his new team.
