A second sticky, uncomfortable situation

Contracts.

Money is what makes the world go round, and Draymond Green will be asking for a lot of it either during the 2020 offseason or the months leading up to it. A trade sending Green elsewhere would allow the option to give Green a max or not someone else’s problem.

More from Blue Man Hoop

Green could for the third time in his seven professional seasons average fewer than ten points per game. That’s just an issue for a player seeking a max contract, and if Green secures a spot on the All-NBA first team or somehow manages to snag Defensive Player of the Year, he’d be eligible for the supermax in 2020.

Already with Stephen Curry under a supermax contract, it’s unlike the Dubs really want to give Green such a contract, significantly limiting their cap space. They’ll already be giving at least one max contract this coming offseason to either Klay Thompson or Kevin Durant.

That said, the money, while there, might not be of best use on Green’s contract. Along those lines, the Dubs could snag an expiring contract and keep both Thompson and Durant this offseason. Players like Khris Middleton could be available for the right price.

While a long ways away, trading Green in order to not be in a situation where you’re forced to choose him or the money might be a reason to get rid of him.
