The Golden State Warriors chose not to match Patrick McCaw’s offer sheet, and so far, it continues to seem like the right decision.
The 23-year-old Patrick McCaw was bought by the Golden State Warriors following the 2016 NBA Draft.
They believed in him when clearly the Milwaukee Bucks, the team that originally drafted him, did not. After two championships, McCaw got tired of not earning much, seeing under $2 million in salary. That attitude got him on the sideline for over half the season and now in Cleveland for the remainder.
McCaw declined the qualifying offer from Golden State and denied another potential contract. He held out, not playing for over the first quarter of the season. After a two-year, $6 million contract was offered to him by the Cleveland Cavaliers, the third-year player was faced with a decision.
Head to Cleveland, the worst team in the East, or take the pay cut and play in Golden State. He took the Cavs offer which then put the ball in Golden State’s court. They decided not to match the offer, letting McCaw be free of the restricted tag and on a one-way flight Cleveland.
Let’s just say Patrick McCaw’s first three games in Cleveland have reaffirmed Golden State that they made the right decision.
In his first game, McCaw went 1-for-2, scoring two points in 18 minutes of play. In game two, he scored three points, going 1-for-5 in 17 minutes. Game three was the best yet though. McCaw failed to score, missed both attempts in 17 minutes of play.
While it’s difficult to expert dominance from the 6-foot-7 shooting guard, this poor of play should be concerning for Cleveland. At just three million per year, it was more than likely still worth their money to take a chance on McCaw, but it’s certainly not looking great so far.
All three of the games in which McCaw has seen any amount of time, the Cavaliers have lost by more than 20 points. Let’s just hope McCaw gets used to losing real quick because it seems like he’ll be doing a lot of it.
