The Golden State Warriors wanted to keep Patrick McCaw, but the guard dipped to Cleveland where he was waived. Now, where will the prodigy land?

After signing a two-year, $6 million non-guaranteed deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Patrick McCaw has reportedly been waived. Once cleared waivers, the former Golden State Warriors guard could join an undisclosed list of several playoff contenders, according to The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Let’s start this discussion back in the offseason.

Patrick McCaw made it clear to the Warriors that he wanted several years and multi-millions in salary, refusing to sign his qualifying offer. He sat out, pouting about the fact that a championship contender well in the luxury wouldn’t pay an unproven 23-year-old.

After all, the UNLV standout averaged just four points per game both seasons in Golden State. He didn’t showcase elite-level talent which would warrant such contract. That said, the Warriors refused to give him said contract and allowed him to sit out.

That left McCaw with one option: find another team to play for. However, in a dry market, McCaw drew little to no interest for quite some time until the Cavaliers came along. The Cavaliers signed him just over a week ago and have since waived him after just three games.

Once he clears waivers, it’s anyone’s guess where he’ll end up.

A shortlist of teams that he should draw interest from is Houston, Philadelphia and Oklahoma City. While none of those teams have reportedly been interested in McCaw, they do classify as contenders and all three could use his services.

Never a great shooter, McCaw thrives as a playmaker. At 6-foot-7, he has the length at the guard position to get around defenders and draw fouls. In college, shooting was a strength for McCaw. In the NBA, he’s proven inconsistent from deep, not a good look for a third-year guard.

As McCaw’s future moves forward, it would only be right for him to sign with a contender and eventually be knocked out by the team he failed to sacrifice for. In the end, Golden State made the right decision to not match McCaw’s $6 million offer sheet.
