Warriors should be one of ‘multiple options’ for Carmelo Anthony

The Golden State Warriors could use added depth this NBA trade deadline, and Carmelo Anthony might be the cheapest, most impactful addition on the market.

Per The Athletic’s Sam Amick, Carmelo Anthony reportedly has ‘multiple options’ if he wants to play this season. While nothing is confirmed, it’d be interesting to see if the Golden State Warriors are among the multiple teams showing interest in Melo.

We all know the LA Lakers will be one of the few options for Carmelo Anthony, but who else gets covered by the umbrella of ‘multiple.’ The Warriors have every reason to test out Carmelo Anthony for themselves.

While the experiment failed with both the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets, Melo’s role on the Warriors would be significantly less than his role on either of those teams. He’d be asked to get buckets in the 15 minutes per game he plays with the second unit.

The only obstacle in the way is that it’s unlikely the Rockets just flat out waive Melo. They want something in return for him, and it seems Daryl Morey and the management have exhausted nearly every trade option on the market.

The last two seasons, much of the blame for the team’s failure has been placed on Melo. While he hasn’t shot well, he has been productive, averaging over 13 points per game in each of the last two seasons.

For the Warriors, they could use his scoring, although they’d, like the others, also hope he could be more efficient. Ultimately, he’d be given the chance to slot in behind Draymond Green and create a solid small-ball lineup for the Warriors second unit.

The Warriors have a bottom-five bench in scoring and a bottom-three bench in threes per game. While he might not drastically improve their rank, Melo would be a cheap supply of both points and threes, making him an ideal addition to their struggling second unit.

By no means do the Warriors need Carmelo, but they could use the added talent. The Warriors bench hasn’t lived up to their expectations, and if Melo arrives with a passion to win and do his best, he would fit perfectly on a team that’s doing their best to run through the West.

With one mindset, Melo and the Warriors could be a perfect fit, but it’s unlikely the Rockets trade the 16-year veteran to a rival competitor. A non-competitor doesn’t want him, and the Rockets don’t want to waive him. See the predicament?
