The Warriors have just 14 players

The Golden State Warriors didn’t want to let Patrick McCaw go. They wanted to retain him and groom him into an All-Star caliber guard. However, behind Klay Thompson, the Warriors couldn’t pay him much or give him the years on his contract he desired.

A restricted free agent, McCaw was offered a non-guaranteed contract by the Cleveland Cavaliers for $6 million which the Warriors didn’t match. After a few weeks and three horrific games, the Cavaliers cut him, making the situation feel like collusion.

Although the issue never developed into a league-wide problem, the Warriors did have it investigated. Now, the Warriors are without McCaw, and they have an open roster spot to use, allowing Melo easy access to join the two-time defending champions.

The buyout market might not be too strong this season, especially with 14 Western Conference teams still trying to fight for the last playoff position. That said, the Warriors shouldn’t holdout to sign a player that is bought out.

Robin Lopez was a buyout target until the Bulls told media they don’t plan to buy him out. Outside of Lopez, the Warriors would be waiting for maybe Jamal Crawford. There aren’t many options, making taking a risk on Melo even more attractive.
