SG, Wayne Ellington

Another shooting guard on the list results from the Dubs lack of a backup for Klay Thompson. Behind Durant comes both Alfonzo McKinnie and Andre Iguodala. There isn’t a player that truly backs up Thompson, and this deadline, the Warriors could solve that problem.

While not at the top of their priorities, trading for Ellington would solve that problem and potentially could solve their cap issues. Assuming Iguodala is traded, the Warriors would bring on Ellington’s expiring contract worth just over $6 million.

Ellington would bring elite shooting to the second unit. He’s currently averaging 2.3 threes per game on about 37% from downtown. Although scoring just 8.4 points per game, Ellington would be asked to do what he’s best at: shooting.

By staggering Durant, Cousins and Curry’s minutes, the Warriors leave a ball-dominant player on the court at all times, increasing the use of having a shooter like Ellington on board.

That allows Ellington’s effectiveness to be even higher than it is in Miami. Bringing on Ellington would strengthen the Warriors second unit while free up a good bit of cap space.
