The NBA Dunk Contest has been faltering in recent years and last nights All-Star Saturday night helped prove that the 3-Point Contest is the new wave.

Outside of the 2016 NBA Dunk Contest, it has been quite a few years since we had a great Dunk Contest. It feels like the 3-Point Contest has finally surpassed it’s bigger brother and is the most exciting part of All-Star weekend.

This year helped prove that the 3-Point Contest should be the headline of every All-Star weekend. The showdown between Stephen Curry and Joe Harris in the final round of the contest was by far the most exhilarating moment of the night.

Harris was absolutely on fire in this contest. He scored 25 points in the first round and 27 in the final round to put a massive amount of pressure onto Curry. The energy in the arena was unreal as Curry started the championship round by knocking down his first nine shots.

Of course, Curry’s shot failed him down the stretch as he would eventually lose to Harris, but the show that these two sharpshooters put on was legendary.

To follow up this performance, fans were then subject to watch a very anticlimactic dunk contest. Hamidou Diallo had a few memorable dunks and Dennis Smith Jr. delivered on a highflying tomahawk over the superstar rapper, J. Cole. But, overall, the contest did not provide much excitement.

It seems like the dunk just doesn’t have the same electricity it used to have. Now, the 3-pointer is what every fan wants to see. Does this mean the NBA should change the format of All-Star weekend?

A few fans on Twitter have suggested that maybe the Dunk Contest should be an event that only occurs every few years, to help make it more of an anticipated event.

However, a more realistic fix should be just to make the 3-Point Contest the final event of All-Star weekend. This way, no one will leave the night feeling disappointed with a poor dunk contest. Rather, they will be fresh off the energy of a thrilling shootout between the league’s best sharpshooters.
